The residency titled ‘It’s Also A Souvenir’ will see the studio space transformed in to an immersive still life gradually created over the time of the residency. Beginning with the source material of ‘On Longing’ by Susan Stewart she will be examining the idea of the souvenir serving as a material trace for authentic experience through a feminist lens. 

The ‘souvenir’ in this sense is a tangible object that serves as a reminder of a person, place, or thing. Brittany will be collecting objects and photographs through her own archival process and over the month of the residency she will arrange them within the studio. The space will become a still life the viewer can move through; a way to make nostalgia and history take a tangible representation. The still life is traditionally seen in two-dimensional mediums, but Brittany will create a three-dimensional still life that evokes a sense of liminality. The familiar objects of nostalgia will create a sense of displacement to a previous time or event, one that makes the viewer question how we associate material culture to personal history.

Brittany has an MFA in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and a Bachelor of Design, Photography, from the Alberta College of Art & Design.
