Matthew O’Reilly

CAAF Residency, January – March 2021

During Matthew’s CAAF residency he will be creating a series of complex dioramas populated with small scale ceramic figurines. Each diorama will borrow from and be inspired by a different historical Canadian painting. Matthew is interested in how these artworks are loaded with values, beliefs, and ideas ostensibly in the past, but alive and well today, and questions surrounding ally-ship, masculinity, and whiteness supported by neo-colonial and critical race theory. Matthew intends to ‘update’ these canonical works and imagine how these archetypal stories would look today or in a nearby future.

Matthew hold an MFA in Craft from the Alberta University of the Arts and a M.Ed. from Lakehead University.
