Natalie Lauchlan

CAAF Residency, July – August 2022

Natalie Lauchlan will be using her residency as an opportunity to return to performance art and the exploration of alternative documentation. As a performance artist, practicing during a global pandemic, many of Natalie’s exhibitions or residencies were cancelled. Using drawing to manipulate the subject, withdrawing information, hiding parts of the body or setting, to prompt the projection, or “filling-in” on the part of the viewer, Natalie hopes to trigger the same empathy that the viewer experiences in watching a live performance. The document created is memory, it can be viewed again and again, building new meanings, and new connections, and can reach much farther audiences. The relationship between the permanence of an image, the reoccurrence of a memory and the ephemeral nature of experience (performance) are all called into question through the drawing of a happening.
