During his residency, Nicholas Tufts will be exploring the Newfoundland tradition of mummering—a Christmas tradition based around the crafting and presentation of handmade masks and costumes. Nicholas’s interest in this tradition is in the embracing of gender fluidity that is often found in costumes. Short moments of loosened regulations while in costume become a sort of safe space for queer or questioning people to safely explore gender presentation.
